What they do

Environmental stewards are your local point of reference for correct separate waste collection

Appointed by the Mayor, environmental stewards are public officials with the following responsibilities:

Inform

Educate residents on proper waste disposal in accordance with local council regulations

Raise awareness

Prevent actions that may harm the environment or affect the appearance and the decorum of the municipal territory

Monitor

Identify possible violations of environmental and municipal regulations regarding the storage, management, collection, and disposal of waste

Inspections

You can report certain environmental violations to an environmental steward

Environmental stewards may carry out inspections and impose sanctions, which are later formalised by the Municipal Police, based on the following citizen reports:

  • Abandonment of any type of waste
  • Uncontrolled disposal of waste and cigarette butts on coastal beaches
  • Improper use of designated waste containers
  • Failure to collect dog waste
  • Supervision of the weekly market
  • Site inspections following weather events
  • Checks on the condition and maintenance of waste containers in the area
